Every Guitar Needs to be Setup for the Desired Action
The term action describes the way a guitar is setup and the way it plays. This refers to the height of the strings above the fret board. When it comes out of a factory, most guitars have poor setups. If every guitar carries all the right adjustments, the cost will work out to be very high. The reason for poor adjustments could be attributed to mass production and the fact that every instrument is not painstakingly checked for the ideal setup. If one has a guitar and needs to setup action on it, it makes more sense for the individual to gain knowledge on the methodology involved since such a need could arise anytime.
Generally, as one goes from high to low strings, the height should gradually increase. High action refers to the string height from the fingerboard and frets. Higher the action, more the effort involved in fret string. This is a great source of discomfort to the fingers.
Different playing styles demand different setups. If the string height is more, adjustments can be made by adjusting the saddle and this is the easiest place to start with. Many electric guitars have set screws or thumbwheels to adjust the string height. A clockwise turn will have the saddle raised and a counter clockwise turn will lower it.
Understanding how much to adjust is a critical area of knowledge to possess. A quick tip is that, at the saddle, it takes twice the correction as the amount which needs correction at the 12th fret. In an acoustic guitar, the process is a little more complex since the saddle will either have to be replaced or shaved to lower the string height or shimmed to raise the height.
